The period started with about 10 minutes of sketching from magazines. This will be a habit we keep up for the semester. We added another student today! We also went over how to change the drafting machines from full scale to 1/4" = 1' scale. We briefly went over the plans necessary to convey how to make a hen house; these included a Front, Side, and Plan view. Mr. Nystrom promises to bring in details of these next class. The remainder of the time was spent selecting a Hen House from the internet to begin sketching.

Today the homework was collected, the handouts on floor plans and symbols for materials. We talked about the requirements for a tiny house and how to incorporate them into our floor plans. Our goal is to complete 3 unique floor plan ideas, from which we narrow down a good one. Homework was to start writing a letter requesting an architect comes to visit our class.

We've started working on our Tiny Houses. Today Mr. Nystrom did a short discussion on drawing one-point perspective drawings of the inside. This should give students some ideas as to how things will come together in a vertical manner (i.e. more than just a floor plan). Students were assigned the task of making 3 unique floor plans with our restriction of 8'-3" wide, with a variable length.
We also started writing letters to local architects requesting they visit our class. To that end, Taylor B. made a Google spreadsheet in which we listed each classmate and the architect they were writing to. Students also started the letter and put it into the shared Google file.

A TED talk worth listening to or watching. This from Alex Steffen about cities and its capacity for sharing.

Today we will review your letters to local architects. We'll also look through the "styles" of homes at Wikipedia. You were tasked with looking on line for appliances to fit into your tiny house. We ended class by looking at drawing our tiny house in Google Sketchup. A good place to learn more about this would be to download the podcast, The SketchUp Show. Specifically, you might like episodes: #6, 21-23, 28, & 38.
